How One Maryland Mom Saved Her Home—and Inspired a Law

Fighting for Home and Hope: Kelly Sealey’s Journey from Divorce to Legislative Change

Sometimes life throws something at you that feels so personal, so overwhelming, that it’s hard to imagine anyone else could ever understand it. But in the middle of a really tough season, Kelly Sealey didn’t just find strength—she sparked real change for families all over Maryland.

I recently had the chance (along with my friend and teammate Ashley Earle) to sit down with Kelly and hear her story. And let me just say: it’s powerful.

From Personal Struggle to Purpose

When Kelly went through her divorce, she found herself facing a heartbreaking dilemma: she might lose the home her kids had grown up in—not because she couldn’t afford it, but because her mortgage was a conventional loan that couldn’t be assumed. Outdated rules and inflexible policies made it feel impossible.

But Kelly didn’t accept “no.” She knew that keeping her kids in their home mattered. And she decided that if the system wasn’t working for families like hers, it needed to change.

How a Mom Became a Change-Maker

Armed with determination—and a deep knowledge of how things work in Annapolis—Kelly leaned into her experience with the Maryland General Assembly. She connected with Senator Gile, shared her story, and together, they got to work. The result? Maryland Senate Bill 0689.

The process wasn’t fast, and it definitely wasn’t easy. But with the help of her network, a great financial planner, and sheer grit, Kelly stayed the course. And one year later, she stood beside her children watching Governor Moore sign the bill into law.

What the New Law Means for Families

Thanks to Kelly, Marylanders going through a divorce now have a path to assume an existing mortgage—something that used to feel out of reach, especially with today’s interest rates. The bill is retroactive to October 2024 and could be a game-changer for families trying to hold on to stability during a major life transition.

Why Her Story Matters

What stood out most to me about Kelly’s journey wasn’t just the policy change (though that’s incredible)—it was her heart. Her courage. Her willingness to take something painful and turn it into something meaningful for others.

“If this helps even one person going through divorce,” she told us, “then I’ve done what I came to do.”

Final Thoughts

Kelly’s story is proof that when we speak up, when we ask for help, and when we’re brave enough to share what we’re going through, big things can happen. Her impact will ripple out to help countless families—and I’m so honored we got to help tell her story.

If you’re navigating a similar situation, or just want to learn more about the bill and how it might help, check out the resources linked in the description or drop a comment. We’re here to help however we can.
